1. Maria wollt’ zur Kirche gehn,
da kam sie an den tiefen See.

2. Als sie wohl an den See hinkam,
der Schiffmann jung stand fertig da.

3. Ach, Schiffmann, schiff mich über das Meer,
ich geb’ dir, was dein Herz begehrt.

4. Ich schiffe dich wohl über das Meer,
wenn du willst meine Hausfrau sein.

5. Soll ich erst deine Hausfrau sein,
viel lieber schwimm’ ich über das Meer.

6. Als sie wohl in die Mitte kam,
fingen alle Glöcklein zu läuten an.
Sie läuten groß, sie läuten klein,
sie läuteten wohl alle zugleich.
Maria kniet’ auf einem Stein,
dem Schiffmann sprang sein Herz entzwei.

Marie se rend à l’église

1. Marie voulait se rendre à l’église,
mais elle arriva près de l’océan.

2. Alors qu’elle pénétrait dans les eaux,
le jeune marin l’attendait.

3. Oh marin, fais-moi traverser la mer,
et je te donnerai ce que ton coeur désire.

4. Je te fais volontiers traverser,
si tu veux devenir ma femme.

5. Si je dois d’abord être ta femme,
alors je préfère bien plus nager.

6. Alors qu’elle était à mi-chemin,
toutes les clochettes se mirent à retentir.
Elles retentissaient tantôt fort, tantôt moins,
mais toutes ensemble.
Marie s’agenouilla sur une pierre,
et fendit en deux le coeur du marin.
