1. Nun hört, ihr Herrn, ein neus Gedicht,
von Rattn und Mäusen zugericht',
von kleinen und von großen.
Wer nun hat dies' Unziefers viel
und solches gern vertreiben will,
der soll ihm helfen lassen.

Refrain:
Die Maus muß sterben und verderben,
die kleinen Mäus, die großen Mäus, die Haselmäus,
die Wassermäus, die Hausmäus, Feldmäus, Spitzmäus, Fledermäus,
sie müssen alle sterben und verderben,
von diesem Pulver,
sie müssen alle umkommen.

(Refrain)

4. So kauf nun dieses Pulver ein,
wenn du hast in dem Hause dein
der Mäus ein große Summen.
Kauft ein, weil ihr mich habt beizeit,
kauft ein, kauft ein, ihr lieben Leut,
wollt ihr der Mäus abkommen!

(Refrain)

Zusätzliches Gedicht von Erasmus Widmann über die Entstehung dieses Stückes:

An den Hörer
Den Hörer möcht wohl nehmen wunder,
Warum ich hab gemischt hierunter
vorstehend’s abenteurlich’s Gedicht
Von Ratten und Mäusen zugericht’.
Drauf antwort’ ich mit dem Bescheid,
daß kommen ist vor kurzer Zeit
ein Mäusarzt hin gen Hall der Stadt,
der nichts anders geschrien hat
als wie’s hier ist begriffen zwar
im Text und Noten im Tenor.
Drauf mich etlich gesprochen an,
daß ich ein Komposition
davon wöll machen, welch’s ich tät,
wie dann allhie vor Augen steht.
Wer diesen abenteuerlichen Mann
persönlich selbst gehöret an,
der kann erinnern sich hierbei,
wie lächerlich es g’wesen sei,
da er schrei mit so heller Stimm
und jedes kauft Pulver von ihm,
davon die Mäus auch kamen um,
wann sie genossen in großer Summ’.
Drum solch’s der Hörer nit veracht,
weil’s nur zum Possen ist gemacht.

1. Now listen, gentlemen, to a new poem
about rats and mice,
small ones and big ones.
Now he who has much vermin
and would like to get rid of it
shall be advised.

Refrain:
The mouse must die and perish:
the small mice, the big mice, the dormice,
the water mice, common mice, field-mice, shrew-mice, rearmice (bats)
they all must die and perish
of this powder,
they all must perish.

2. They cause a lot of damage in your house,
that's why you should get rid of them
by means of this pure powder.
As soon as they have eaten it
they will die of it from that very hour,
the big ones and the small ones.

(Refrain)

3. And when you have a lazy maid,
then the mouse often causes her a lot of trouble,
as nothing is safe from it:
lard, bread and fruit, yes, everything it finds, indeed,
as soon as the mouse has got it, it gnaws and skins,
that's why you must get rid of it.

(Refrain)

4. So buy this powder immediately,
if you have a great number of mice
in your house.
Buy it, in view of my presence,
buy it, buy it, dear folks,
if you want to get rid of the mice!

(Refrain)

Additional text from Erasmus Widmann about the 'creation' of this piece:

To the listener
The listener might wonder
why I put into this collection (of songs)
the following strange poem
which deals with rats and mice.
So I'll answer with the information
that there had come a short time ago
a quack to our city
who ballyhooed nothing else
as I wrote down in the Tenor voice.
So many people asked me
to do a composition
about that, what I did,
as everyone can read.
All those, who have heard this
adventurous man by themselves
can remember by this song
how ridiculous it was
as he shouted with a very high voice,
and everyone bought powder from him,
which killed the mice
if they ate a big amount of it.
So the listener should not despise this,
because it's just made as a joke.
