English.png English text

O peaceful England,
While I my watch am keeping,
Thou, like Minerva,
Weary of war, art sleeping!
Sleep on a little while,
And in thy slumber smile;
While thou art sleeping, I’ll
Be wakeful, ever wakeful!

Sword and buckler by thy side,
Rest on the shore of battle-tide,
Which, like the ever-hungry sea
Howls round this Isle;

O sleep till I awaken thee,
And in thy slumber, smile!

England, fair England,
Well hast thou earned thy slumber;
Yet, though thy bosom
No breastplate now encumber,
Let not thy fingers yield
Grasp of thy sword and shield;
Thou wilt awake and wield
Destruction, if I call thee!

Sword and buckler by thy side, …

O friedvolles England,
während ich Wache halte,
schläfst du, wie Minerva,
müde vom Kriege.
Schlafe ein Weilchen,
und lächle im Schlaf.
Während du schläfst,
werde ich wachen, stetig wachen!

Ah! Mit Schwert und Schild an deiner Seite
bleibe am Ufer der Kriegswogen,
die wie das ewig hungrige Meer
diese Insel umbrausen.

O schlafe, bis ich dich wecke,
und lächle im Schlaf.

England, holdes England,
wohl hast du dir deinen Schlaf verdient,
doch obwohl kein Brustharnisch
jetzt deinen Busen beschwert,
lass deine Finger nicht vom Griff
des Schwerts und Schutzschilds weichen.
Du wirst erwachen und Zerstörung bringen,
wenn ich dich rufe!

Ah! Mit Schwert und Schild …
