Text & translations
Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 60)
Latin text
1 In finem. In hymnis David.
2 Exaudi, Deus, deprecationem meam ; intende orationi meæ.
3 A finibus terræ ad te clamavi, dum anxiaretur cor meum ; in petra exaltasti me. Deduxisti me,
4 quia factus es spes mea : turris fortitudinis a facie inimici.
5 Inhabitabo in tabernaculo tuo in sæcula ; protegar in velamento alarum tuarum.
6 Quoniam tu, Deus meus, exaudisti orationem meam ; dedisti hæreditatem timentibus nomen tuum.
7 Dies super dies regis adjicies ; annos ejus usque in diem generationis et generationis.
8 Permanet in æternum in conspectu Dei : misericordiam et veritatem ejus quis requiret ?
9 Sic psalmum dicam nomini tuo in sæculum sæculi, ut reddam vota mea de die in diem.
Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer
English text
1 Hear my crying, O God : give ear unto my prayer.
2 From the ends of the earth will I call upon thee : when my heart is in heaviness.
3 O set me up upon the rock that is higher than I : for thou hast been my hope, and a strong tower for me against the enemy.
4 I will dwell in thy tabernacle for ever : and my trust shall be under the covering of thy wings.
5 For thou, O Lord, hast heard my desires : and hast given an heritage unto those that fear thy Name.
6 Thou shalt grant the King a long life : that his years may endure throughout all generations.
7 He shall dwell before God for ever : O prepare thy loving mercy and faithfulness, that they may preserve him.
8 So will I always sing praise unto thy Name : that I may daily perform my vows.
Metrical paraphrase by Isaac Watts
English text
When, overwhelmed with grief,
My heart within me dies,
Helpless and far from all relief,
To heav'n I lift mine eyes.
O lead me to the rock
That's high above my head,
And make the covert of thy wings
My shelter and my shade.
Within thy presence, Lord,
For ever I'll abide;
Thou art the tow'r of my defence,
The refuge where I hide.
Thou givest me the lot
Of them that fear thy name:
If endless life be their reward,
I shall possess the same.
