General Information

Title: Regina caeli laetare (2.p. Resurrexit, sicut dixit)
Composer: Pierre de Manchicourt

Number of voices: 6vv   Voicings: SSATBB or SATTBB

Genre: SacredMotetVotive antiphon for the Office of Compline during Eastertide (from Holy Saturday to the Saturday after Pentecost)

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1539 in Motettorum, Book 14 (Pierre Attaingnant), no. 2

Description: Manchicourt employs an ingenious canon in the two Superius parts: the direction in the source "Sans souspirer ne chantez poinctz" (lit. "without breathing, and don’t sing dots") requires the comes (or ‘follower’) voice to omit minim rests and remove the dot from any dotted notes, the result being that the comes starts four semibreves later but ends the prima pars three-and-a-half semibreves earlier than the dux (and in the secunda pars, five and four semibreves respectively).
