General information

Publication

The first edition of The Leicesteshire Harmony was published in 1759. The title page is dated, and describes the work as being 'composed, in Modern Taste, for Four Voices, By an Eminent MASTER of the County of Leicester; and now first published For the Use of COUNTRY CHURCHES. By JOHN ARNOLD, Philo-Musicæ, Author of the Compleat Psalmodist, Essex Harmony, and the Psalmist's Recreation. The first edition was pubished in London. The imprint reads 'Printed by Robert Brown, for the AUTHOR; And Sold by C. Hitch and L. Hawes, at the Red-Lion, and J. Buckland, at the Buck, in Paternoster-Row; S Crowder, at the Looking Glass, near London-Bridge; J. Johnson, at the Harp and Crown, over against Bow Church, Cheapside: Also sold by G. Basford, jun. at Loughborough in Leicestershire.

The second edition was published in 1767: the title page is again dated. This describes Arnold as 'Organist, Author of the Complete Psalmodist, Essex Harmony, Psalmist's Recreation, and Church Music Reformed'. The imprint reads: 'LONDON: Printed by J. Purser, at No 4, in Red-Lion Court, Fleetstreet, And sold by J. Buckland at No 57, L. Hawes and Co. at No 32, and S. Crowder at No 12, all in Pater-noster-Row.'

Description of contents

While the title pages of both editions of the work ascribe its composition to 'an eminent master of the county of Leicester', the music may have been composed by Arnold himself: the Hymn Tune Index attributes the psalm tunes to him.

The first edition consists of 26 metrical psalm tunes (pages 1-70), 9 anthems (page 71-143) and settings of the Te Deum and Magnificat (pages 144-174). In the second edition, the Te Deum and Magnificat are replaced by two 'new psalm tunes' (pages 144-157): the first of these, 'Belgrave Tune', is a set-piece (a through-composed setting of a metrical text), while the second, 'Syston Tune', is a metrical psalm tune.
