General Information

Title: Tu es Petrus
Composer: Peter Philips

Number of voices: 8vv   Voicing: SATB-SATB

Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: a cappella
Published: 1625

Description: Philips includes the subsequent text (beginning with Quodcumque (Whatsoever you bind on earth...), which is often set as a separate motet. Therefore the full text and translation is given below. Philips concludes with several repetitions of the text "et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum" with continually varying rhythmic patterns, however, they never occur at the same time in any of the eight voices, creating a lively bell-like effect.

The motet was published as early as 1625, and an organ part-book exists. The reduction is essentially a thorough bassus and cantus, with simplified rhythms. It can be performed a cappella or with instruments.

Tu es Petrus
et super hanc petram ædificabo Ecclesiam meam:
et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam.
Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum.
Quod-cum-que li-ga-ve-ris su-per ter-ram,
e-rit li-ga-tum et in cæ-lis,
et quod-cum-que sol-ve-ris su-per ter-ram,
e-rit so-lu-tum et in cæ-lis.
Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum.

English.png English translation

Thou art Peter,
and upon this rock I shall build my Church,
and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it,
and I shall give to thee the keys to the kingdom of Heaven.
Whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth shall be bound in heaven,
and whatsoever thou releaseth upon earth shall be released in heaven,
and I shall give to thee the keys to the kingdom of Heaven.
