General Information

Title: Tu es Petrus
Composer: Peter Philips

Number of voices: 8vv   Voicing: SATB.SATB

Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: a cappella
Published: 1613

Description: Philips includes the subsequent text (beginning with Quodcumque (Whatsoever you bind on earth...), which is often set as a separate motet. Therefore the full text and translation is given below. Philips concludes with several repetitions of the text "et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum" with continually varying rhythmic patterns, however, they never occur at the same time in any of the eight voices, creating a lively bell-like effect.

An organ part-book exists from c. 1625. The reduction is essentially a thorough bassus and cantus, with simplified rhythms. The motet can be performed a cappella or with instruments.
