Biography

Frank William Westhoff was born in O’Fallon, Missouri, and grew up in St. Charles County. He was educated in the public schools and began the study of music at age 8 under an uncle who was an instructor of nobility in Germany. He studied vocal music at Lindenwood College and, at 16, became director of the choir at a German Catholic Church in St. Charles. He went to Edwardsville, Illinois, and Decatur, Illinois, to study orchestra, cornet, and clarinet. He taught vocal music and later served as a supervisor of music in the public schools of Decatur. He joined the Illinois State Normal university faculty and began to direct the entire school in required singing for 20 minutes each day, held regular classes in the afternoon, and directed the glee clubs. He later became head of the music department. He published many textbooks, including three volumes of the “Ideal Music Series,” that were widely used by schools in many parts of the nation. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Church. He died in Normal, Illinois.
