Biography
George Noyes Rockwell was born in Utica, New York. He was educated in the public schools and, at age fourteen, became organist at a local church. He relocated to Albany, then went to Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he was organist at Second Presbyterian Church. He then went West as organist in Muscatine, Iowa, where he also directed the choir at First Congregational Church, then moved to Chicago, Illinois, connected with the Williams Piano & Organ Company. He died in Chicago. His compositions were sacred and secular including an opera, numerous anthems, organ works, songs, and hymns. Presser Publishing Company issued a special catalog for his music, some published posthumously. He also was a writer on music and editor of music. His son George Noyes Rockwell, Jr. (b. 1881) was also a musician, operating a music store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and for many years was a piano teacher in Kansas City, Missouri.
