Biography
Granville Ernest Humphreys was born in Kirkstall, Yorkshire, England, and was Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. He was a recognized teacher of singing. He was organist of the Wesleyan Church in Leeds, was director of the Manchester and District Nonconformist Choir Union, was connected with the South London Mission (Wesleyan), and conducted The Granville Humphreys Choir. As a teacher, he was Professor of the Art of Teaching, Voice Production at the Tonic Sol-fa College and Lecturer in Class Singing at the Training School for Music Teachers. He organized and promoted competitions and concerts, and was active as adjudicator. He authored numerous books, including How to Teach Class Singing, and The Teaching of Musical Form. He died in Surrey. His compositions include cantatas, anthems, part-songs, and songs.
