Biography

John Spencer Curwen was born in Plaistow, England. He was the son of Rev. John Curwen (1816–1880), the successful music publisher who developed and promoted “Tonic Sol-fa” system of music reading and founded the Tonic Sol-fa College. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Music, studying under Sir George A. Macfarren, Sir Arthur Sullivan, and Ebenezer Prout. He assisted his father and succeeded him as head of the publishing company J. Curwen and Sons. He also served as principal of the Tonic Sol-fa College. He was editor of the Tonic Sol-fa Reporter and the Musical Herald. He composed a number of works and made numerous Tonic Sol-fa editions of major choral works by many major composers.
