Rev. Malcolm Maclean was born on the Island of Scarp, Harris, Scotland. After recovering from injuries suffered during WWI, he went to Edinburgh University, gaining prizes for Celtic and Scottish Studies and for Church History, then New College, Edinburgh. He was inducted to Applecross, Ferintosh, and Maryburgh, and was a chaplain attached to the 33rd British General Hospital in Africa, Iraq, Malta and Sicily during WWII. He was a noted Gaelic scholar, fluent in both Scottish and Irish Gaelic, and was very active as an adjudicator at Mods and music festivals in Scotland and Ireland. He had some association with Scottish conductor and composer Sir Hugh S. Roberton.
