Biography

Richard Frank Martin Akerman was born in Reading, England, and was one of the first students of the Royal College of Music. He was assistant music master at Eton College and held a number of appointments around Windsor, Berkshire. He was the first editor of a series of anthems and church music published by “The Year Book Press” (1911). He is principally known as assistant and sub-organist at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle from 1900-1928 under Sir Walter Parratt. He composed a number of anthems and was known for his arrangement of Bach’s “Jesu, Joyance of my heart” for treble voices.
