Original text and translations
Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem, in a strange land and alone,
All they could find was a crib in a stable, sharing the animals' home,
Mary gave birth there, cradled her baby, held him so close and so dear,
And said to him, welcome (x4), my little Emmanuel, you are welcome here.
Shepherds from hillsides came down to Bethlehem, sent by an angel on high,
Kings from a far land came to the stable, led by a star in the sky,
Mary and Joseph greeted the strangers, opened the door without fear,
And said to them, welcome (x4), wherever you came from, you are welcome here.
Herod the tyrant tried to kill Jesus; Mary and Joseph took flight!
Warned by an angel, they fled the country under the cover of night.
People in Egypt gave them a refuge, helped them when danger was near,
And said to them, welcome…
Spirit of Christmas, be in our hearts now, we'll show the love that you send,
Following Jesus, we welcome strangers, hoping we'll soon become friends:
Fleeing from tyrants, visiting babies, or joining our holiday cheer,
We say to you, welcome…
