Biography

William McKendrick was born in or near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England. Little is known of his background or training, but he taught music in Newcastle using John Curwen’s Tonic Sol-fa method, and eventually received recognition as Fellow at John Curwen’s Tonic Sol-fa College of Music in London. He remained teaching there until his death in Crouch Hill, London. He was a master of Tonic Sol-fa and his part-songs were well received. His music, published by Curwen’s publishing house, included both traditional and Sol-fa notation.
