A Third Sett of Psalm and Hymn Tunes (John Fawcett)
General information
Publication
John Fawcett's book A Third Sett of Psalm & Hymn Tunes was published for the author by James Peck. As well as being sold by Peck at 47 Lombard Street, London, the title page notes that it was 'Sold also by Mr John Barlow 16, New Cannon St. Manchester, Mr James Fawcett Highgate Kendal, by the Author at Halshaw Moor near Bolton le Moors Lancashire, & all Stationers & Music Sellers.' It was priced at 6s, and the title page claims that it was entered at Stationers Hall, although the Hymn Tune Index does not record any identified entry. While the book is undated, Fawcett's obituary (Bolton Chronicle, 2 November 1867) describes him as having worked in Farnworth (near Halshaw Moor, given on the title page as his location, along with the information that he was 'Late of Kendal') in 1817-18: on this basis, the Hymn Tune Index dates the work to 1818-19.
Publication date and place: 1818 by James Peck in London.
Description of contents
The collection consists of 35 strophic hymn or metrical psalm tunes, one set-piece (a through-composed setting of a metrical text), and one through-composed prose 'chorus'.
The music is laid out in full score with the soprano air next to the bass. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch. As in Fawcett's previous work A Second Sett of Psalm and Hymn Tunes, keyboard accompaniments are indicated both by small notes printed between the soprano and bass parts, and by bass figuring: in addition, some of the pieces have independent instrumental parts for 2 trumpets, 2 oboes, 2 violins, violoncello and bassoon.
