A page may have been protected to prevent defacement by spammers, or because it is a commonly-used template that might accidentally be altered because of an unintended edit link appearing on another page.
In either case, inspect the history or discussion of the page to attempt to establish the reason for the page protection before making any further alteration; if there is an issue with the protection or the edit requiring a policy decision, it would seem advisable for the issue to be posted as a new discussion topic in the CPDL forum.
