Biography

Howard Ellis Carr was born in Manchester, England, and gained recognition as a London theatre conductor. He went to Australia for a period, but returned to England and was conductor of the Harrogate Municipal Orchestra, founding and conducting the Harrogate Choral Society. Returning to Australia, he held positions as musical director for J.C. Williamson Ltd., professor at the State Conservatorium of Music, and conductor of the Royal Sydney Philharmonic Society. He died in London. His compositions include light orchestra works, ballet music, theatre music, tone poems, songs, and part-songs.
