German text 1. Da droben auf dem Markte spazier' ich auf und ab, ja auf und ab, den ganzen lieben langen Tag und schaue die Straße hinab. 2. Es steht ein Regenbogen wohl über jenem Haus, ja überm Haus, mein Schild ist eingezogen, ein andrer hangt heraus. 3. Mein Schäflein wohl zu scheren, ich sparte keine Müh, ja keine Müh: ich bin heruntergekommen und weiß doch selber nicht wie. 4.  Da kommen drei Chaisen gefahren! Der Hausknecht springt in die Höh, ja in die Höh. Vorüber, ihr Rößlein, vorüber, dem Lammwirt ist gar so weh!

English translation Over at the market I walk up and down, up and down, the whole live-long day and watch down the street. There is a rainbow just above that house, above the house, my nameplate is taken down, a different one hangs there. I’ve spared no effort to shear my little sheep, no effort. I’ve been ruined, but I don’t know how Three coaches are coming! The porter leaps up, leaps up. It’s over, little pony, it’s over, "The Lamb" inkeeper is oh so sad.
