English text
We must leave the old home, darling,
Where we’ve lived so many years;
Don’t you hear the raindrops falling,
Falling thickly like our tears?
Do you hear the breakers on the sea
And the brokers at the door?
We must leave the old home, darling,
They won’t stand us any more!
We haven’t paid last quarter,
So I’ll tell you what we’ll do:
We’ll flit away soon
By the light of the moon
Down the banks of the I. O. U.
We must pay the price of poorness,
It’s the only thing we’ll pay;
It is time to change our quarters,
For tomorrow’s quarter day.
And the landlord he will dun us, dear,
As we’ve done him, you and I;
Oh, the way is rough and stoney,
And we are stoney, too!
We haven’t paid last quarter,
But I’ll tell you what we’ll do:
Tho’ of trouble there’s a peck
Yet we’ll draw a little cheque
On the bank of the I. O. U.
