English text
The sacred chimes at eventide
Fall sweetly on the ear,
Breathing a message far and wide
That we should now prepare
For fleeting time being on the wing,
Long with us will not dwell
To ever chant the evening hymn,
Or hear the Vesper Bell.
The solemn silence of the night
Returns upon the scene,
Whilst Luna, with her peaceful light,
Sheds forth a silvery beam,
Which calmly falls on glassy lake
And cheers each forest dell,
Till morning dawns and nature wakes
To bless the Matins Bell.
